MONCTON (N.B.) – Geraldine Botterill of Miramichi, N.B. bought four Set for Life tickets last Monday. She took her time scratching them, playing the first two on Tuesday and saving the other two for Wednesday, when she finally revealed a Set for Life top-prize win on her very last ticket.
“The last one was my favorite colour, purple, so I was saving it for last,” Botterill said. “I didn’t get anything on the other tickets, and you always seem get two Set for Life symbols in a game, so I was just lackadaisically scratching and then all of a sudden, I looked again and I thought, ‘There’s the third one.’”
Botterill could barely believe what she was seeing.
“I started crying and hyperventilating and I called my brother and said, ‘I think I just won Set for Life,’” she said. “I didn’t come down off the ceiling all day.”
Atlantic Lottery’s Set for Life is a $4 Scratch’N Win ticket that offers two options for the top prize. Winners can choose to receive $1,000 a week for 25 years, or a lump sum payment of $675,000. Botterill will receive the lump sum payment.
“I went back to the store where I bought the ticket to have it validated and the cashier brought me around the back of the counter to look at the screen,” Botterill said. “It showed what I had won and again, I was crying. It was just so exciting.”
Plans for her winnings include upgrades to her home, purchasing a new car, planning a vacation or two and enjoying financial security for the rest of her life. Botterill works remotely part-time for a consulting company based in British Columbia. While she loves her work and has no intentions of retiring just yet, she says she now has the comfort of knowing she can when she eventually chooses to.
Botterill also has big plans to celebrate her recent windfall.
“I’m going to throw a huge party for all my friends,” Botterill said. “I like sharing. It’s really nice to have the win but if you can’t share it with people around you, what’s the point?”
Botterill is the second New Brunswicker to win a Set for Life top prize in just one week, along with Kim Campbell of Fredericton, N.B. who also took the lump sum payment of $675,000.
Botterill purchased her winning Set for Life ticket at Courtesy Convenience in Miramichi, N.B. The seller will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.
