MONCTON (N.B.) – Barbara Nelson of Saint John, N.B. occasionally purchases Scratch’N Win tickets on her way to work and plays the games in the breakroom before her shift. However, she’ll soon be starting her days much differently, as she is retiring early thanks to her recent Set for Life top-prize win.
“With the way the economy has been going, I didn’t figure I would get to retire early or retire at all,” Nelson said. “This says, ‘Yes, you can.’”
Atlantic Lottery’s Set for Life is a $4 Scratch’N Win ticket that offers two options for the top prize. Winners can choose to receive $1,000 a week for 25 years, or a lump sum payment of $675,000. Nelson opted to receive the annuity of $1,000 a week for the next 25 years.
“I like the Set for Life prize, that’s why I get that ticket,” Nelson said. “Now I’m just going to sit back and see where it leads me and let what comes, come.”
Enjoying early retirement from the chain restaurant she has worked at for many years is the only major plan Nelson has for her prize money. She said retirement will allow her to enjoy the summer, her weekends and spending more time with family.
“All the things that go on through the summer all happen on the weekends and I was always working the weekends,” Nelson said. “Now I can do what I want and figure out what that is, instead of trying to pay bills. I can enjoy the summer.”
Nelson’s Set for Life top-prize win was the seventh and final top prize available on the 4091 series of the game. On April 1, 2025 a new series, 4099, was launched and offers seven new top prizes to be won, all of which are still available to be claimed.
Nelson purchased the winning Set for Life ticket at Esso Proxi Church in Saint John, N.B. The seller will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.
